How Bugaboo and Buzz Buzz Came To Be

As you all may know by now, I am launching my first children’s book this fall – The Disgusting Adventures of Bugaboo and Buzz Buzz: Into the Toilet of Doom! Since my wife tells me everyday that she is surprised that I don’t get hit by a car every time that I cross the street (not kidding), this is clearly a big accomplishment for me. It’s also a special project for me as my eldest son, Milo, helped with the illustrations and made various other contributions throughout the book!┬áHere’s his picture of me:

It’s a story about two fly brothers, who get sick of living outdoors and find themselves in all of these disgusting situations and ultimately in a toilet. It’s a story that embraces the funny, brutally-honest observations of the world from a younger perspective. It also showcases the constant love-hate relationship between siblings and ultimately the love that binds them together. The story is wrapped with potty humor (literally), off-the-wall jokes and a funny moral in the end that is guaranteed to make your child laugh like a crazed hyena.

How did this book come to be, you ask? Well, I shall tell you, little one. It started a few years ago during my boys’ bedtime routine. For some reason, I thought it was a good idea to tell these fantastical stories about two mischievous flies and get my boys all riled up just before bedtime (subtext – I have an IQ of 70). I would tell stories about falling into toilets, discovering Gatorade factories, spaceships flying out of closets, building pools in houses and other ridiculous tales. The boys would laugh so hard they would literally gag.

I really enjoyed this time with my boys and always looked forward to it after a long day at work, but never thought to do anything with it. But, my wife pushed and pushed and asked me to put pen to paper. After two years of pushing (again, not a joke), I relented and decided to go for it, drafted the story, conducted a peer review with a select group of friends/authors and submitted it to publishers. Mascot Books, a well known, longstanding publisher focused on the genre, took a chance on this little man and the rest is history.

Stay tuned for further updates!
